Step-by-Step Guide
How to calculate CGPA from SGPA
Your CGPA is simply the combined picture of every semester's SGPA so far. Enter each semester above, and the calculator handles both common methods for you. Here's how they work manually.
| Semester | SGPA | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | 8.0 | 22 |
| Semester 2 | 7.6 | 24 |
| Semester 3 | 8.3 | 23 |
| Semester 4 | 7.9 | 24 |
Simple average: (8.0 + 7.6 + 8.3 + 7.9) ÷ 4 = 7.95
Credit-weighted: 738.9 ÷ 93 = 7.95
Which Method?
Simple average vs credit-weighted average
Both methods are widely used — the right one for you depends on whether your semesters carry the same credit load.
Equal credits every semester
CGPA = Sum of SGPAs ÷ Semesters
Credits vary by semester
CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Credits) ÷ ΣCredits
Comparison
SGPA vs CGPA
| Factor | SGPA | CGPA |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | One semester | All completed semesters |
| Resets? | Yes, every term | No — cumulative |
| Best for | Tracking one term's performance | Overall academic record, final degree classification |
Watch Out For
Common mistakes to avoid
Averaging percentages instead of SGPA
Convert each semester's SGPA to CGPA first — averaging semester percentages separately and converting once at the end can give a slightly different (and less accurate) number.
Ignoring credit differences between semesters
If your semesters don't carry equal credit loads, a simple average can overstate or understate your real CGPA. Use the credit-weighted method whenever credits vary.
Leaving out a backlog or repeated semester
Universities typically still count a semester's original or improved SGPA in your CGPA — check your institution's specific policy on repeated courses before excluding one.
Forgetting to check your university's exact method
Most Indian universities use a simple or credit-weighted average, but a few average total grade points across the whole program instead. When in doubt, ask your registrar.
Got Questions?
Frequently asked questions
What's the formula to calculate CGPA from SGPA?
The simple method is CGPA = Sum of all SGPAs ÷ Number of semesters. If your semesters carry different credit loads, use the weighted method instead: CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Total Credits.
Which method should I use — simple or weighted average?
If every semester carries roughly the same number of credits, the simple average is close enough. If your credit load varies noticeably between semesters, the credit-weighted average is more accurate.
Do I need to enter credits for every semester?
No — credits are optional. Leave them blank and the calculator gives you the simple average CGPA. Fill in all of them and it also shows the credit-weighted CGPA alongside it.
Is this the same method my university uses?
Most universities use one of these two standard methods, but always cross-check against your official transcript or your university's examination handbook if the exact figure matters for an application.
How is CGPA different from SGPA?
SGPA covers a single semester. CGPA is the average of every SGPA you've earned so far, giving a cumulative picture of your academic performance across your whole degree.
Can I use this calculator partway through my degree?
Yes — just enter the SGPA for however many semesters you've completed so far. Your CGPA will simply reflect your progress to date, and you can recalculate it again once new semester results come in.
